Jeanie:

Washing soda is sodium carbonate, like baking soda only "stronger"....so the baking soda in the dishwasher detergent "recipe" isn't really necessary. I use washing soda in my laundry all the time to soften the water and boost the detergent. You can find it, usually on the top shelf, in the laundry aisle of the grocery store.

What is washing soda, never heard of it.
I stopped using my dishwasher 4 years ago. I moved into my present house and the GE dishwasher never did work well. Food still on dishes and I rinse before I load. If on crumb, it will still be there along with film, makes me think no way can these be clean. So we hand wash. The key tosaving water when hand washing is to fill both sinks up after doing a quick rinse on everything but cups.
Sounds so simple but I think a lot of folks, expecially kid don't remember.

The Art of Zen Living » Simplifying the Dishwasher...

We all end up needing to do dishes. While it’s greener and gets your dishes cleaner to do them by hand, most of us opt to use the dishwasher. I know that dishwasher detergent is one of the items I’m constantly scanning for coupons for. No more. ...
